Extra Froth: Be Kind To David Day 2010

Our show may be relegated to the land of syndication (which means, BTW, I can see Numb3rs several times a day on several different stations in Canada) but that does not mean our holiday will not be celebrated.

Yes, it is Be Kind To David Day. You may celebrate in whatever way you choose. If you wish, be kind to people named David or behave like David and be kind to everybody. Find a person named Colby and say something snarky!

Whatever you do, remember, the most important aspect of BKTDD is that everything about David is still, even in syndication, awesome.

Extra Froth: Numb3rs: A Poetic Tribute to the Finale

(Tonight's horrific abuse homage to a classic work is brought to you by the CBS stations holding off on airing the finale, for sports' reasons, and to avoid the spoiling of others.)

The light was shining on TV,
Shining with all its might:
It did it's very best to make
The Numb3rs sets all bright --
And this was very odd because,
WTF, Numb3rs sets and light?

The fandom's sitting sulkily,
And they really want to shun
Almost all and sundry at CBS
After tonight's show is done --
"It was very rude of them," they said,
"To come and spoil the fun."

The bowl was lit as lit can be,
And wit was wry as wry.
You could not see Super!Colby, because
No Super!Colby was in the sky:
No feds were flying overhead,
There were no Super!Feds to fly.

The Fandom and the Recapper
Were walking close at hand.
They wept like anything to see
Such a cast disband
"If we got one more season,"
They said, "it would be grand."

"If 7 feds over 7 seasons
Could be kept for one more year,
Do you suppose," the Fandom said,
"Our subliminal message would be clear?"
"I doubt it," said the Recapper,
But still puts one more 7 here.

"O Executives, come and walk with us!"
The Fandom did beseech.
"A pleasant walk, a pleasant talk,
Through the internet's reach:
We cannot ask more than your time
To listen to our speech."

The chief exec looked at them,
But never a word she said:
The chief exec winked her eye,
And shook her heavy head --
Meaning to say she did not choose
To ease the fandom's dread.

But for the fandom, they cried out,
Even suggested a tasty treat
They wrote, they hoped, their spirits up,
They felt they could not be beat.
And this wasn't very odd because, you know,
They hadn't met with defeat!

For some execs, still followed them,
And they knows what's for;
And saw the protests on the web
But wait, there's more, and more, and more!
And if they pay attention,
Then the Fandom, will adore.

The Fandom and the Recapper
Chatted for another hour or so
And then left messages at N3.org
Conveniently set up just so:
All the Fandom's plans are there,
As well as fears and woe.

"The time has come," the Fandom said,
"To talk of many things:
Of shoes, and ships, and stealing tax,
Of broccoli cabbages -- and kings --
And why Don is so smoking hot,
And whether David has wings.

"But wait a bit," the execs cried.
"Before we have our chat;
For some of us are still writing our protests,
And your letters are rather fat."
"No hurry," said the Recapper,
"For something as important as that."

"A singular plan," the Fandom said,
"Is what we chiefly need:
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern aside,
Are very good indeed --
Now if you're ready, execs dear,
We can begin to plead."

"But not at us!" The execs cried,
Turning a little blue.
"After all those letters, that would be
A dismal thing to do!"
"But the show is fine," the Fandom said,
"As we do admire the view."

"It was so kind of you to come!
And it is such a lark!"
The Recapper said nothing but
Typed up some more snark.
I wish though, influential blogger's
Views weren't quite so dark.

"It seems a shame," the Fandom said,
"And we think it's a cruel trick.
After cutting the order of eppesodes
And the season ending so quick!"
The Recapper said, "And what about my OTP?
About romance, Don can be thick!"

"I weep for Fedcakes," the Fandom said:
"I deeply sympathize."
We sobs and tears, they listened to,
The smart, the brave, the wise.
And found their favourite eppesodes
On the DVDs they prize.

"O execs," said the Recapper,
"Sure, we've had a pleasant run,
But could we not give it one more go?"
But the answer came there none --
And this was scarcely odd because
They don't know if the show is done.

Recapper's disclaimer: I would never assume to know what others' think in a given situation. This is all meant in good fun!

Extra Froth: Numb3rs: Top 10 Reasons We Need a Season 7

Delayed recaps will be up shortly, but until then, have my top 10 list as to why we should get another season!

10) More Edgerton! We always need more Edgerton!

9) We need a definitive answer over who is the true Numb3rs superhero: Super!Colby or Super!David. There must be a costume portion of the competition. Spandex will be required.

8) Because I haven't spent the last almost 3 years of my life begging for a shout out, world peace, and a pony, for nothing! (To reach truly pathetic, something like this has to be done for at least 4 years.)

7) Because there are still areas / people in L.A. that Stephen Gyllenhaal hasn't tried to blow up / shoot at / put in peril.

6) Colby needs to go out on at least one, normal date. This means, no potential witnesses, no acrobats, and no winning bets that cause the fandom to squee at previously unheard of decibel levels. While we're at it, David, the most marriageable on the show, needs to find someone.

5) We still don't know the name of Liz's able-bodied hamster! Think of all the fanfic writers clamouring for details!

4) Don still hasn't found what he's looking for (which is Robin, but he's a bit slow on the uptake with this one).

3) Two words: Charmita -- expecting. Imagine the hilarity as Charlie becomes a nervous father-to-be and Alan goes nuts at Babies R Us.

2) Charlie has yet to solve why the meaning of life is 42 (which is way more important than P vs. NP).

1) We'll never see the planned musical eppesode "Once More, With Physics."

Extra Froth: Mad Libs Letter to CBS

Want to protest what's being done to our beloved show but don't know what to say? Sure, we can fill in the feedback form at CBS, but, as I've heard from reliable sources N3.org and Rob Morrow's Facebook paper counts more.

I know we're a socially conscious fandom, but remember, paper, after it has served its purpose, can be recycled. If you feel guilty about sending a piece of paper and an envelope -- send a postcard. Specifically, send a postcard that shows your location. Let's show CBS that people everywhere love the Fedcakes and Cal Sci Crew!

Now, if you would rather send a letter, I've decided to come up with a bare-bones outline, and all you have to do is fill in the details. It's like Mad Libs, that game played in middle school, just with a Numb3rs-twist. You are more than welcome to use this format, if you please.

Dear Ms. Tassler,

I would like to express my __(FEELINGS ABOUT THE ORDER BEING REDUCED)__ in regards to the recent announcement about this season of Numb3rs being shortened. I strongly __(VERB INDICATING DISAGREEMENT)__ with this __(ADJECTIVE)__ decision.

Extra Froth: Because CBS Is Displeasing Me

Dear CBS PTB,

Did you think I wasn't going to notice? At some point, it had to occur to someone that either myself, or the fandom might've noticed the reports circulating. Of course, I can see why you might erroneously assume I'd miss your little announcement. Sure, I've had the H1N1, followed by pneumonia and am currently moving at the pace of a lethargic sloth, but there are some things that are still working.

Things like, say my automatic notifications on several sites regarding Numb3rs. Hey, wait, there's a 3 where the e should be in the title? Well, someone should tell Reuters.

So, here you hoped a quiet announcement would result in a lack of reaction? Please, when was the last time I did anything quietly? Did you ignore the 525 days I whined about the sinking of the good 'ship Don/Robin? I may not have much of a voice at the moment (the first person to make a crack about that dies horrifically), but my typing skills are still intact.

Therefore, cutting the eppesode order of Numb3rs from 22 to 16 is definitely going to get this lethargic sloth moving. Over the years of viewing my adorkable professor and the Fedcakes, I have learned a few things about math. For instance, 6 fewer eppesodes means about 252 fewer minutes of Don, Charlie, Alan, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, Liz and Nikki, Amita, and Larry's interest in white food. Do not make me bring up how unhappy I will be if you tell me I will no longer have Edgerton in my life.

In case I am not clear, I am completely not cool with this. In fact, I am extremely displeased. One might even say, distinctly perturbed by these developments.

I expect this to be rectified tout de suite. Sorry, you live in the US, so let me use plain old English: immediately. You do not want to earn my wrath.

No love,
Theoriginalspy

PS: I will also inform anyone and everyone that if they would like to write to you to express his or her ire, they can send their grievances to Nina Tassler President, CBS Entertainment 4024 Radford Avenue, Room 3118, Studio City, CA 91604.
PPS: If anyone has a brilliant idea as to what could be sent: hair products, calculators, origami flowers, white food, rulers, please feel free to leave it in the comments.
PPPS: If you have another contact address -- either snail mail or e-mail, please let me know.
PPPPS: Yes, I know the number of PSs in this letter is a little bit middle-school girl passing notes, but I've had H1N1, pneumonia, a lot of medications, and severe exhaustion. I get to include this number of PSs.
PPPPPS: Despite all my recent issues, I'm still tremendously disconcerted by this turn of events. I'm not taking this quietly -- even if I am, technically, taking this lying down because of my illness.

ETA: (Because I was sick of PSs) Look, there's now a petition. *waves shiny object* you will sign it.

Extra Froth: Happy Be Kind To David Day!

One day a year, Special Agent David Sinclair should be free from being attacked, shot at, beaten up, or generally mistreated by the Numb3rs universe. Therefore, October 12 has been named Be Kind To David Day.

(Please ignore any reference to it also being Spy's birthday.)

Therefore, read your comic books! Watch David-centric eppesodes! Be nice to people (not just those named David), all in the name of David Sinclair!

Most importantly, be awesome, just like David.

Extra Froth: Fall Has Fallen (but hopefully not the ratings!)

On the day before the Numb3rs season premiere, I think it might be appropriate to announce a couple of changes here at I, Spy. First of all, I'd like to state the obvious:

  • The sky is blue
  • I still don't have world peace, or a pony
  • I will still be covering Numb3rs
  • I reject Torchwood's reality and replace it with my own
  • I will never believe that the new Doctor doesn't carry a fake ID.
Now for some iffier items:

  • I may have to divorce myself from Dollhouse. Really, Alan Tudyk is so awesome, I think he ruined it for me.
  • I will eventually get caught up on Torchwood -- when I can talk about it, without crying, or railing against RTD. The same with Primeval, but I will never, ever stop making jokes about being up a tree.
  • Instacaps will not be done for every eppesode (or episode) this year. They will only be done if I have something to say. I am known to be somewhat verbose.
  • I am on the search for some new things to cover. I am taking suggestions in the comments.
Finally, this time of year means it's time to celebrate. Celebrate what? Well, it's time to celebrate my birthday everyone's BFFedcake, David Sinclair!

Yes, it's about time for my birthday Be Kind To David Day!

Wondering exactly why we need a day to celebrate my birthday Rosencrantz? Well, let me explain. No, there is too much. Let me sum up. Since my beloved show seems to believe that, when it comes to Davie, injuring / traumatizing / putting in peril, is standard operating procedure, I thought he needed a little love. Not like that, but really, it would be nice if my BFFedcake found someone lovely.

Thus, I picked my birthday to celebrate all things David Sinclair! Drink some coffee! Read some comics, and, just as my BFFedcake is awesome, we should be awesome! In fact, since it is Be Kind To David Day, be kind to someone else! (Please note: you do not have to be kind only to people named David. That would be awkward, particularly if you are married to someone named Jim, or Molly, or something.)

As a fandom, I find us to be supportive, considerate, and, in general, awesome. We can totally pull this off.

Oh yes, and just to make it as official as possible, it is an event on Facebook!

Extra Froth: Torchwood: The Instacaps Are Where?

Obviously, since I'm on the wrong side of the pond, I will be unable to see Torchwood: Children of Earth until it's broadcast over here. Therefore, there will not be any instacaps, or percolated recaps until they've aired in North America. Obviously, those of us over on this side of the pond have no way of getting it.

And I do believe Canada will be getting it first! Oh Canada!

If you need to have a quick fix, I did instacap the trailer when it was first released. I do believe Janto kissing was involved.

*drool*

I will, though, assume the first episode was completely awesome.

Of course, it's just a guess.

Extra Froth: Primeval: Because I don't think up a tree is the way to end things

In case you haven't already heard, Primeval has been cancelled.  Now, while I don't think this was a stellar season (a phrase which here means, Hillary was no Stephen and two light-haired Scots are not interchangeable, thank you very much), up a bloody tree, in the Cretaceous is not really an ending.  It's more of a how to find yourself on the worst endings for shows list, in perpetuity.

Thus, I'm doing my part.

If you're not very in your face, try signing the petition.

If you'd like to express your displeasure to TPTB, ITV nicely tells us how to tell them what we think.  Thus if you would like to send a politely worded stern letter expressing your displeasure, than feel free.

Unfortunately, as much as I've looked into it, I don't think it's possible to send raptors after TPTB because we're not a crazy a fandom.  Annoyed, despondent, and shocked, yes, but not crazy.

Oh yes, and because raptors are extinct.

Extra Froth: The End of Civilization As We Know It.

I have seen it. It is like watching three trains crash into each other, all at the same time. Despite the horror, insanity, and the crash you know that's coming, you cannot look away.

It is: I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here.

While I'm amazed at the plain old immaturity (bordering on insanity) of one of the players, I find myself with a whole new conundrum.

I may never look at Agent Ian Edgerton the same, ever again.

This is not going to help me get the Numb3rs finale recap up any faster. In fact, it might traumatize me for several days.

*crawls into the corner, in the fetal position.*

Extra Froth: Numb3rs: A Brief OTP History Lesson

Recapper's note: This originally started off as the opening for the recap for "Guilt Trip." Unfortunately, by the time I was done writing it, I realized it really needed it's own, separate post of SQUEE!

For those of you who know me, you know why I just squeed all over the start of this extra froth post. For those of you that have no idea what I'm talking about - let me introduce you to my OTP, the good 'ship Don/Robin.

A Brief History of Don/Robin
Don and Robin met while working on a gang case in the second season. Robin (who was instantly more interesting than Don's current flame, Nadine, the sex-kitten DA) was horribly underused in the eppesode yet still made an impact on your humble recapper. 105 days later, Robin met Don again at a local shooting range and some flashback to high school moments happened in the car - that is, until Charlie called. (ETA: It's been pointed out that even though I always love blaming Charlie for stuff like this, since I did claim it was brief history and not how Spy would wish it to have been, I have to be clear that the FBI interrupted. PS: I never claimed it would be 100% accurate but Admiral Andrea is intent on keeping me honest.) This is also the start of my issues with Don picking up the phone at the wrong time. Though their moments together during this eppesode were brief, they were hot and funny and fairly realistic - all things I want to see in a relationship.

Robin was often talked about afterward but not seen. I had a horrible feeling that my 'ship was about to be sunk, when Liz arrived on the scene. This was not the Liz we know now. While she was snarky and gorgeous and brilliant, she was the one thing that made me loathe her with every fibre of my being, she was clearly a threat for my OTP. While I love Liz now, as Athena to Nikki's Artemas, we did not start on friendly terms.

Then came the most traumatic eppesode in the history of Numb3rs, at least, the most traumatic for me, "Blackout." It began with what I thought was Don cheating on Robin. Sure, they tried to distract me by having a scorchingly hot scene between Don and Liz but I would not be distracted, as proven my my screencap at the time.
After this eppesode aired, I demanded that my therapy, for all my pain and suffering, be paid for by TPTB. At the end of the eppesode, Don revealed that Robin had broken up with him, and that made me support any therapy Don would need later on in the season. Yes, I blamed the chief Fedcake for the breakup, as well as TPTB.

I would like to say that my response to Liz was very mature, considering the severe emotional trauma I went through.
Actually, now that I look back, perhaps I wasn't as mature as I like to tell myself. Again, this time in my fandom life was not a happy one. I was allowed a few emotional outbursts, considering I never did get compensation or a shout out as an apology from any of the Numb3rs PTB.

Over the next 525 days (yes, I counted), I never forgot Robin. I must admit, there was a moment of weakness, where I begrudgingly accepted the relationship between Liz and Don. I felt I had no choice. Even though I made either an explicit or implicit reference to Robin in every one of my recaps, I was trying to accept that I might need to move on. Oh, I should point out that I just picked five random recaps from that time to link to in the previous sentence. I'm so confident in the number of times I mentioned Robin, be it in print or in one of my audio recaps, that I don't even feel the need to check.

Do I even need to mention that I was happy when Liz broke up with Don? It may have taken three attempts to finally end it, but I rejoiced when it was over, and finally felt some true affection for Liz. She was no longer that relative you tolerate because you have to. She was now that relative who is quite cool, but won't find their place in the family until an appropriate partner comes along - in Liz's case, Nikki.

Back to 525 days after the tragic breakup. Robin made a return to Numb3rs, and it's a good thing I live alone, otherwise everyone would be deaf from my squeeing. I found out the original exit of Robin was unplanned. The actress went and had a baby. Since I lost Robin for 525 days and Megan for a portion of the third season I declared a moratorium on procreation. Apparently, a recapper's demands are not respected because two of the reasons for the final exit of Megan were Diane Farr's twins.

Upon Robin's return, Don had to save her life, to which I owe him my eternal gratitude. For a good portion of "Checkmate" I was convinced TPTB were really trying to break me by bringing back Robin for one eppesode, only to kill her off. Luckily, this did not happen, and I was rather impressed with myself for very tempered and well thought out reaction to the relaunching of the good 'ship Don/Robin.
Trust me. That response was very restrained.

Let me digress a moment and point out a shorter version of the history of the good 'ship Don/Robin appears in the "Checkmate" recap. It was not written by me but totally played into my meglomania theory of events.

The couple lost no time, with Robin appearing in a couple more eppesodes in the fourth season. Again, Don and I had to have a very serious chat about picking up the phone at the wrong moment. I was worried that the newly resumed relationship was too fragile to survive, but I was, to my joy, proven wrong. Robin could do things like call Don on his bullshit and yet he would still buy her watermelon candies. This is true OTP material, people!

As the fifth season rolled around, I was given even more hope in the permanence of my OTP. Robin and Amita, the potential Mrs. Eppeses, attempted to bond. It was deliciously awkward since neither of them are (thankfully) insipid giggly women. Robin also worked on both of the Brothers Eppes (not like that) until Charlie finally started the process to get his clearance back.

I had a moment of panic when a private law firm started noticing this AUSA (the acronym stands for: Aweseomly Underused Single Attorney) and Robin went to interviews in New York City. When she didn't take the job, I turned into a big pile of fangirly goo.

The current state of my OTP has them dealing with some heady issues. Don's recent discovery of his faith caused some unfortunate but realistic friction. Despite this, the couple is in it for the long haul because, as Robin put it, "Don Eppes finds a shrink and God in the same year. I can’t wait to see what happens next." Also, she had to support him through the reappearance of Buck Winters, all the while trying to work out exactly how much space Don needed, without pulling away from him altogether.
In conclusion, here we are, three years from where an AUSA and a Fedcake first met. Throughout the past three years, they've gotten together, broken up, risked their lives, bickered, worked things out but not without some serious bumps along the way. Thus, here is the brief history of my OTP, flaws and all, and I love them for it.
Final thought: SQUEE!!! (It had to be said.)

Extra Froth: How to Make a Trailer, Torchwood Style!

To: Promotions Department
From: The Powers That Be in the Whoniverse
Re: Trailer

After meeting with the cast and crew at the pub we have determined the best way to advertise the upcoming mini-season of Torchwood. We feel our suggestions are important to not only ramp up interest but also to showcase the best that Torchwood has to offer. Thus we have come up with the following action plan.

1) Introduce the premise. We don't care if it's said by a main character, a guest star or just some random dude. Whatever the basis of the story is should be made clear, without giving everything away.
2) Feature the most important plot point / deus ex machina / literal representation of the title. Make sure whatever brief clip you show also sets the tone for the entire miniseries. As this is Torchwood, the tone should be creepy tinged with suspense.
3) Flash the title. We don't want any rumours going around saying we're calling this mini-series "Jack Harkness and the Pillar of Storgé" or "All's Well That End's Well."
4) Expand the plot. Just like when you introduced the premise, make sure whatever is added here is vague and sounds way more informative than it really is.

5) Make the fandom squee. Insert a shot of a fan favourite character. It does not matter what they are doing. There are bonuses in everyone's pay packet if it incites discussion of what might have just occured to said character.
6) Expand the plot even further. Now that the initial moment of squee is out of the way, the other main characters and guest stars can be featured. All parts of this must ramp up suspense, and make the fandom try to invent ways to make time speed up.

7) Include the falling piano shot. While this is really an internet meme run amok, a character looking upwards while concerned indicates to the audience that danger can come from anywhere. It is also easy to macro, thus making it to popular fandom communities.
8) Interspersing action with mood shots. Suggestions include odd chanting and men in uniform. Neither can be related in any way to Jack Harkness's sexual proclivities.

9) Blow up Gwen. No matter which camp a fan falls into - the pro-Gwen or anti-Gwen - this will get them talking not only about Gwen's safety but also Ianto's as this will lead to the inevitable "OMG WILL SOMEONE DIE!" panic.
10) Needle the fear. Use the previous shot to build onto this one. Make sure it is clear that Ianto is in clear and imminent danger.
11) Add something secretive yet mockable. Make sure that everyone is talking like Torchwood is still some sort of secret agency that must be kept secret, as opposed to something everyone in Cardiff, like a little old lady, discusses on a daily basis.
12) Use a quip. This may only be done by Ianto. It does not matter if his bike has a bell, whether or not the phones work, or being an underappreciated civil servant but it must be quick and quippy.
13) Accompany a montage with the theme tune. Be sure to include running, shooting, action, screaming, something gross, heroic shots of our heroes being heroic, and fire.
14) Appease the fangirls. This means some serious kissing. The shot must also be clear enough to be turned into an icon to be featured on blogs in perpetuity.
15) Repeat the title flash and finish the theme tune. Without giving away too much, you've left the fandom dying for more.

In conclusion, once all this is done, come down to the pub and join us while we toast the tortured fandom that is waiting impatiently for series 3.

Who I am and why I'm here

Hello, I'm Theoriginalspy (Spy for short). If you've read my recaps, welcome back! If you have no idea, to quote the great philosopher Mick Jagger, please allow me to introduce myself.

Previously, I've worked for two separate, yet equally important sites, the now defunct Fandom Talk, where I recapped Numb3rs and House, and Recapist, where I recapped Numb3rs, Doctor Who, Torchwood and Primeval. All right, I also recapped the very short-lived Drive (Nathan Fillion, enough said) and the even shorter-lived Viva Laughlin (Hugh Jackman, can you blame me?) for as long as they lasted.

Earlier this month, all of the recappers from Recapist were let go. Our parent company, Buzznet, decided that they only wanted free content. Thus, they are now getting what they pay for.

For the time being, I'm striking out on my own, but I'm not completely alone! I can be found at this blog or through the awesomely spectacular midseasonsreplacements, who have agreed to let me play with some of their bandwidth. It's a very nice sandbox in which to play, so I'm happy to be on board.

Schedule Changes

There will be a few changes from the Recapist days. While working for that site (henceforth to be known as TSTSNBN -- The Site That Shall Not Be Named), I had only 48 hours to get the recap up. By the time I deducted sleeping, eating, proving to the rest of the world I wasn't kidnapped by ninjas, monkeys, or both, my RL job, and other day-to-day activities, that actually equalled only about 4-8 hours, instead of the full 48. From now on, I will give myself the full 48 hours. This means that, like in the old Fandom Talk days, the recaps will be up prior to the next episode (or eppesode, in the case of Numb3rs) airing.

This will give me enough time to pay extra-special attention to my favourite prop (the lime-green fluted well-lit bowl on Numb3rs), my fictional Welsh boyfriend (Ianto's MINE damnit!), my adorkable Doctor (Tennant, don't leave me!) and hide from the scary, scary dinosaurs. Or it will give me time to do randomly strange things never-before seen in a recap. (Don't ask.)

What's New?

An Instacap will be posted after each episode / eppesode airs. I cannot guarantee their content, as it will be my initial reactions to everything, without editing. commenting will be disabled on the Instacaps as I don't want anyone to think I'm borrowing their ideas. In the past, I myself have been plagiarized, so I don't wish anyone to go through the same issue.

The Percolated Recap will be what people have come to expect from a full, well thought out recap.

Extra Froth is simply that. Whenever something tickles my fancy show-wise, I will write it up. Whatever the Extra Froth posts may contain, they're all in good fun.

Why these names? There were inspired by another great love of mine - coffee. Speaking of coffee, would anyone like to buy me one? I need caffeine for snarking. (Points to button on the side.)

Extra Froth: Beware the Grangers! By Lainey Spoy-Right

This is a reprinting of an article originally done by Lainey Spoy-Right for The Quibbler on March 18, 2006. With the most recent revelation about Colby's character, Ms. Spoy-Right reports she's working on a follow-up piece about Hermione's connection with either Voldemort, or some shady anti-establishment organization called SPEW. Ms. Spy-Right released the following statement. "While the whole Voldemort thing has been done to death, we're fearing this new upstart anarchist organization, SPEW. ...they have buttons. Any organization with buttons is cause for a concern according to our highest standards here at The Quibbler."

Hermione Granger with American Ties?

By: Lainey Spoy-RightSenior Obscure Connection Analyst

Hermione Granger and Colby Granger share little in this world, other than a common last name. She is British. He is American. She is the most exceptional witch of her generation. Although Colby has yet to have his intellectual moment in the shade, glow in the dark stars, candlelight sun, he is the greatest sidekick FBI Agent David Sinclair ever had. Hermione speaks English. Colby ties to speak English, but also tries to speak Spanish. We do understand that some coincidental similarities, such as hair colour do exist; for instance, Hermione can correctly use the word loquacious in a sentence and Colby once drank at a bar called Loquacious, during Spring Break, junior year. (Yes, we here at The Quibbler do recognize that not everything is part of the international garden gnome conspiracy.)

Despite the suspicious coincidences of the hair colour, last name and the loquacious connection, Hermione and Colby Granger have nothing to do with one another.

OR DO THEY?

This Senior Obscure Connection Analyst has discovered that these two people are in fact, long lost cousins.

The history of the Granger family is long and sordid. The name Granger means “One who superintended a large farm, or grange.” It has been identified that the first Granger first got his name from tending the large Yorkshire farm, Thrushcross Grange – as owned by the Linton family. The Grangers stayed out of sight during the decades long feud between the Lintons and the neighbours, the Earnshaw / Heathcliff household. The name of the Earnshaw /Heathcliff farm has been lost to history as this Senior Obscure Connection Analyst cannot find it.

After the family grew too large to tend the two large granges, one son, Hindley and his wife Eunice, moved to London. Childless for many years, it was a surprise birth of twins, Benjamin & Samuel, in 1900, that allowed the line to continue. Benjamin was a bright child, into reading and arithmetic, but Samuel, was the physical child, and was an avid golfer. By the age of 12, Samuel was invited to compete in a tournament in New Haven, Connecticut and was booked passage on a new steamliner, the Titanic, and for many years, his family believed him dead.

Meanwhile, Benjamin married twice, fathering 15 children, the 8th one, Delbert, born in 1943, eventually became a dentist, and in 1979, became the proud father of Hermione Jane Granger. Her grandfather’s love for math is evident in his young granddaughter, who, though she is the first witch in her family (although there were always questions about Great Aunt Philomena seeing ghosts back at Thrushcross Grange), Hermione’s best subject is Arithmancy – the telling of the future through mathematical properties prescribed to letters. When Hermione’s name is entered into the arithmancy calculator, one has to wonder if the whole fortune telling through numbers has a point. (Which we at the Quibbler have been asserting that opinion since our inception.)

Samuel, it turns out, never made it on the Titanic and not having thought to ask for money for a coach home, in case the whole steamliner thing didn’t work out, spent several years working in a coal mine in Wales. There he met and married a coal miner’s daughter – thought about entering into the music business, but instead immigrated to Lawrence, Kansas, to try his own hand at the old family business of running a farm. When Samuel and his wife learned of the tradition to do with males in Lawrence Kansas, he up and moved the family to Winchester Idaho – as it sounded like a good name, considering he knew a Winchester family in Lawrence.

Samuel’s second son Lawrence, born in Lawrence but raised in Winchester, married and became the proud father of Colby Granger – named in honour of his grandfather’s coal mining days. After college, Colby went forward and learned to be a skilled army interrogator and took up the family tradition of playing golf on the weekends. Eventually, Colby found himself working for the FBI, where he often solves cases by using math, which often uses mathematical properties prescribed to letters when the values are unknown. (Colby’s name also works out according to the arithmancy calculator. His overall number is his personality!)

Samuel’s former family friends, the Winchesters from Lawrence, (who also left Lawrence, as a precaution as Sam and Dean are two males) started investigating the concept of magic being present in the Granger family, when six obscure manuscripts (although there is suspected to be a seventh manuscript in the works) were found telling the story of the heroic life and times of the Granger’s British branch of the family. They uncovered the connection and found shocking similarities between these second cousins. Both use math as a way of telling the fortunes of friends or criminals. Hermione has a vine wand and Colby is known to enjoy the products made from the fruit of the vine. It has been suggested, though documentation is lacking, that Hermione might make an excellent auror, or a dark wizard catcher. Colby catches criminals. Both are superior sidekicks. It’s all in the genes.

The last connection between these two families is that Colby’s first cousin (son of Samuel’s first son) whose name is only Granger (like Cher), shows some tendencies towards the more intellectual pursuits of Benjamin’s line. Recently, he moved to an undisclosed city where he has started reading and memorizing books (like Hermione Granger) as he claims that soon the fire department won’t be used to put out fires, but will be used burn books instead, making him an intellectual exile. Perhaps the arithmancy runes are telling him something we need to know.

In conclusion, coincidences connecting these two second cousins can only lead to one conclusion – they too must be in on the international garden gnome conspiracy.

Beware the Grangers!
